Home to the Confraternity of the Holy Trinity, the chapel contains paintings by Murillo, Valdés Leal and Roldán representing the meaning and search for charity. Iconographically speaking, the chapel can be divided into three essential parts: the first area under the choir, known as the “Hieroglyphics of Death”, seeks to convey how ephemeral life is. The second comprises works of mercy. Humility, and how important it is, constitute the third area.

After work on the chapel was completed in the 17th century, a poorhouse was built where city tramps could spend the night. Eight years later a decision was made to enlarge it and turn it into a hospital.

Did you know? It’s hospital was one of the first to admit the destitute sick.
