ARCHIVO DE INDIAS

TOUR MONUMENTAL

Stop at Universidad

Commissioned by Charles III in 1785, it houses all the administrative documents related to the Spanish empire’s overseas territories. It was declared a World Heritage Site in 1987. An extensive collection of archives, maps, records and all types of historical documents dealing with the Spanish colonies are kept there. Among these, there are original texts by Christopher Columbus, Magellan and Hernán Cortés.

Did you know? It is estimated that if all the archives were placed on a single shelf, it would be about 9 km long.
